NEW Discussion Primer – London’s strategy to adapt to climate change

What actions do we need to take to adapt to London’s current and future weather?

The City of London in collaboration with several others has prepared a Climate Change Adaptation Discussion Primer. The City will be collecting comments about the document through the remainder of summer and fall. This Climate Adaptation Discussion Primer will lead to the completion of an Adaptation Framework for London.

Climate Change Adaptation in London

2023 Progress Report

Annual CEAP Progress Reports provide detailed information on climate change actions and achievements in London and, in addition to detailing the progress made towards the goals of the CEAP, provide additional context and information about actions by others in the community, action at other levels of government, and recent weather trends.

2023 Update Report

The 2023 Update Report provides current information and addresses new items directed by Council or items of significance to climate change that arose in the first half of 2023. The update report is in addition to the annual Progress Report that will be submitted in May/June each year.

2022 Progress Report

The 2022 Progress Report is the first of many reports that will be produced to communicate the efforts of many to address climate change in London, Ontario. The direction for addressing climate change was set with the first Climate Emergency Action Plan for London, which was unanimously approved by City Council in April of 2022. The Progress Report will be presented to and discussed by the Strategic Priorities and Policy Committee on Tuesday, May 30, and City Council on Tuesday, June 6. Further details about the Progress Report will be shared throughout the summer months to encourage more action, collaboration, and community engagement.

About the Climate Emergency Action Plan

London’s new Climate Emergency Action Plan is a fundamental and required response to the City’s climate emergency declaration. As part of this plan, the City has established new near-term and longer-term goals to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

The new Climate Emergency Action Plan is a community-wide plan to achieve three main goals: 

Net-zero community greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050

Improved resilience to climate change impacts

Bring everyone along (e.g., individuals, households, businesses, neighbourhoods)

Review the Climate Emergency Action Plan and workplans

The complete Climate Emergency Action Plan can be read online, along with workplans and supporting documents that cover different areas of focus.

Engage with community resources and organizations

There are many opportunities in London to take climate action, prepare for severe weather, and make London more resilient to climate change. Engage with the environmental organizations below to learn about the Climate Emergency Action Plan, share your ideas and experiences, and help reduce greenhouse gases.

Thinking Globally, Acting Locally is a new program in collaboration between Western University, the City of London, and London Public Library supporting student-led initiatives advancing sustainability in the community.
